Experience a wondrous creation between 30 April – 6 May for Lakes Ignite 2016… Seven Nocturnal Rainbows for the English Lakes – a dramatic light installation created by artist Charles Monkhouse, inspired by the poets and artists of the Lake District, in particular JMW Turner’s famous painting ‘A Shower’, Buttermere.

The rainbows will appear as the light fades each evening and will become stronger as night takes over from day. Each rainbow consist of up to 250 floating LED units, each with its own GPS sensor, reacting to their location to create a gigantic spectrum as they travel across the lakes. The exact motion of the lights will depend on the wind, and each passage will last approximately one to one and a half hours.
Seven Nocturnal Rainbows is a celebration of the English Lakes as a site for art both past and present.
Seven Nocturnal Rainbows is a creative tribute to the stunning Lake District landscape and revisits places that have enthralled earlier artists, particularly the painters of the Romantic and Picturesque periods. It ties together many of their formal elements: land and water, light and dark, rain and sun, garden and wilderness and the search for the perfect viewpoint with the practice of artists today.
The programme of evening ‘Rainbows’ will visit three of the English Lakes in turn: Coniston Water, Ullswater and Grasmere between 30 April – 6 May.
// ENJOY A CULTURAL ADVENTURE AROUND CONISTON
Fancy visiting the Coniston Rainbow? We recommend that a top priority before you set out would be to start your day with a hearty, full English at the Blue Bird Café overlooking the lake.
That’ll set you up for a day in this inspiring landscape – one thing’s for certain it’s going to be a workout for the mind, body and soul!
Next head over to Grizedale Forest and pick up bikes, maps and tips from the Grizedale Mountain Bikes and head off on the 14 mile Silurian Way – it’s a great route taking in many of the Forest’s unique sculptures and their dramatic backdrops – art on the move so to speak!
Afterwards you could plot up in the Grizedale Café and enjoy some top scran in comfy surroundings.
And before you spend the evening gazing at the Nocturnal Rainbow on Coniston why not take a 19th century Steam Gondola across Coniston Water to Brantwood, home of John Ruskin, the writer, artist and social reformer? His former home is full of art, objects and stories, while outside a range of trails that thread through the scenic 250-acre estate.
Then it’s off to Coniston village on the western shore, for a pub supper at the Black Bull Inn – which even brews its own beer… what’s not to like?
Why not spoil yourself and visit all three sites and gaze in wonder at what is set to be a captivating experience…
